The video quality in the YouTube application on the 3DS is NOT a system limitation

Firstly, it’s possible to watch videos from other sites through the application. I’m assuming these are videos running in HTML5 rather than Flash, but that’s still something.

Secondly, it appears that the YouTube application is a glorified web browser. This could explain why it’s slow and buggy. Every “page” of the app is simply a web page. (So I guess it’s like browsing YouTube on an iPhone.)
Thirdly, if you find a video player that’s set to a higher quality, the 3DS can play it. But this apparently takes a considerable amount of time to buffer which explains why the default quality in the YouTube app is low.
I’m yet to test any of this myself — I’ll do that shortly, I suppose — but you cancheck out the full instructions to try it for yourself.
